Get Weather updates on Fedora desktop with OpenWeather extension

Live weather updates on your desktop in the form of an applet is a great way to have instant temperature updates in your region. OpenWeather GNOME shell extension for your Fedora workstation helps you in giving that beautiful and functional eye-candy. Apart from giving the real-time weather, it can also provide weather forecast, humidity report, wind speed, atmospheric pressure, and sunrise & sunset times for your location.

Not just your location but you can specify a number of different locations to display weather data for, especially handy when you are travelling several places in a short span of time.

Install OpenWeather on Fedora Workstation

This tutorial is tried and tested on Fedora 25 Workstation and should work on Fedora 22 and above.

STEP 1: Launch ‘Terminal’ and run the command to login as superuser.


Enter root password when prompted.

STEP 2: Run the command to install the OpenWeather Shell extension.

sudo dnf install gnome-shell-extension-openweather

Pay attention to the ‘Terminal’ and enter ‘y’ when prompted.

STEP 3: Log out and login again to Fedora.

STEP 4: Open your internet browser and go to this link:

STEP 5: Toggle the button to ‘ON’. You should now see the temperature in the ‘Panel’.

STEP 6: Click on the ‘Settings’ icon to configure the extension to add new locations.
