Zorin OS 12 Lite Edition now available for download

Zorin OS team has announced the release of Lite edition of their popular Zorin OS 12 operating system. Zorin OS 12 Lite can be termed as their biggest ever release, specifically designed for the low-end computers.

According to the team it is a lightweight distro that can run on computers as old as 14 years! Zorin OS 12 Lite is based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) and includes Linux Kernel 4.8 deived from Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak).

As Zorin OS 12 Lite is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, it will be supported with security updates until April 2021.

What’s new in Zorin OS 12 Lite


The biggest visual change of the Zorin OS 12 Lite edition is the new desktop environment. The dev team replaced LXDE with Xfce to give a more customizable, intuitive, and and elegant interface.


Zorin OS 12 Lite comes pre-installed with the in-house built Zorin Appearance utility. Using this utility, users can change the desktop layout to match that of Windows operating system with a single click.  Premium editions of Zorin OS 12 Lite will also feature Gnome 2 and macOS-like layouts (coming soon).

More editions

Lite Education editions is also available for free dowload. This will allow users with old and low-spec machines to have access to all the best Zorin OS apps and features out-of-the-box.

Note that this pre-release version is not recommended for installation on production machines due to potentially unstable software included.
